How to Choose AI Models in

“Why you’re burning through limits and money for nothing”: how to choose the right AI models for each task in 2026
There’s no point in always picking the heaviest model, cranking reasoning up to the max, and running absolutely everything through it—even sorting files on your Mac or summarizing emails.
If you have a paid subscription or use an API, you’ll burn through your heavy Sol or Fable 5.1 limits in two days on primitive routine work.
I built an interactive dashboard based on Artificial Analysis benchmarks (Intelligence Index v4.1) and calculated the real cost of solving a single task for popular models and reasoning levels (Effort). Here are the key takeaways.
📉 The Terra trap: why this model makes no sense
Comparing the Luna, Terra, and Sol families: why Terra is a dead zone
Look at the intelligence-to-task-cost chart for Luna, Terra, and Sol:
• Luna xhigh delivers an intelligence score of 50 for just $0.033 per task. • Terra high delivers the same score of 50 but costs $0.228—that’s 7 TIMES MORE for exactly the same result! • And the maximum Terra max (57 points / $0.526) costs more than the flagship Sol high (57 points / $0.427).
Verdict: Terra is a dead zone. There’s no practical reason to overpay for it.
🧭 A practical routing framework: 80 / 15 / 5
In real work, it’s best to split tasks into three buckets:
🟢 80%+ of tasks — Routine: parsing, drafts, sorting, fast sub-agents, basic code ➔ Luna High / X-High ($0.02–0.03). It’s dirt cheap, while deeper reasoning (Effort) delivers a huge quality jump (+18 points compared with Low).
🟡 15% of tasks — Complex logic: product hypotheses, synthetic CustDev, unit economics, production code ➔ skip Terra and go straight to Sol Medium ($0.29 / 56 points) or Sol High ($0.43 / 57 points).
🔴 5% of tasks — Critical thinking: core architecture, security audits, strategy, deep system redesign ➔ Sol Max ($0.95 / 61 points) or Claude Fable 5.1 (66 points / $3.69), if your budget allows you to pay for maximum intelligence.
🚫 The worst picks: what you definitely shouldn’t use
• Terra at any Effort: a pointless 5–7x waste of budget. • Luna at Low and Medium: too weak at reasoning for negligible savings. • Claude Sonnet 5 ($1.72 for 55 points): the worst price-to-performance ratio among modern models—you can get 55–57 points from Sol/Luna for a fraction of the price. • Claude Opus 5 ($2.34 / 63 points): if you’re going to pay for ultra-heavy reasoning, you’re better off going straight to Fable 5.1 (66 points).
⚡️ Hidden champions on the Pareto frontier
All models on the efficiency map and the Pareto frontier
Looking beyond OpenAI models: • GLM-5.3-Flash (Z AI): a Chinese open-source breakthrough—57 points for just $0.09! One of the best models for performance per dollar, right up there with Luna. • Gemini 3.8 Flash: a solid 57–59 points for $0.41–0.58. With Google subsidizing 50% and offering high limits in its $20 subscription, it’s also a top pick.
If Claude is your only subscription, it makes sense to add Codex, Z.AI, or Gemini for routine work so everyday prompts don’t bankrupt you.

Sol:
